Yoga at the Fort: This trip combines two of our favorite activities: sea kayaking and yoga! Take a guided paddle out to Fort Gorges for a 45-minute yoga session followed by a tour of the Civil War Era Granite Fort!

Fort Gorges, a Civil War-era granite fort surrounded by water, is one of the most fascinating spots in Casco Bay, and it's only accessible by small boat. The former parade grounds, surrounded by gorgeous granite walls, is a remarkably ideal spot for yoga. The trip will begin with your licensed kayak guide offering a basic kayak lesson and then leading the group on a paddle through Portland harbor and across open water to tiny Hog Island. You'll land on a beach by the fort's entrance and explore its elegant granite halls and dark passageways. Make sure you check out the gorgeous view of the Portland skyline from the rooftop!

Then your yoga class will begin in the grassy, calm parade grounds of the fort. You'll stretch, strengthen and rejuvenate. The yoga class is suitable for all ages & abilities. The kayaking part of the trip is great for all skill levels -- even first-time kayakers.

Muscles are in balance when opposing muscle groups are of proportional length and strength. It is important to balance muscles, since muscles pull bones. Balancing muscles improves range of motion and joint function including straighter tracking of the hips and knees. A variety of techniques help lengthen the short muscles and shorten the long muscles to bring the body toward balance. One of the clinically proven techniques is strain-counterstrain, which brings the two ends of a muscle closer together to release tension, regardless of how long it has been tight. Soul Care: Heart practices for Challenging Times. Melanie Burns with Live music with Fletcher Boote

We come into the world wired for connection. With our first breath we embark on a lifelong quest to feel safe in our bodies, our environments, and in relationship with others. The autonomic nervous system, our embodied surveillance system, directs this process responding to sensations in our body and signals from the world around us. Polyvagal Theory, developed by renowned neuroscience researcher Stephen Porges, explains from a neuro-psycho-physiological perspective how and why we move through a continuous cycle of mobilization, disconnection, and engagement with the world. Polyvagal Theory offers a map to guide us as we repattern our nervous systems for increased physical and emotional wellbeing. Through a polyvagal perspective we can track individual styles of autonomic regulation and explore patterns of action and engagement.

In this workshop we will first develop basic fluency in the language of Polyvagal Theory and then move into exploration of practices, including breath, myofascial release, art, and vocalization, that influence the tone of the nervous system. We will bring cognitive and experiential awareness together in an embodied exploration of the three streams of autonomic activation. This is an excellent workshop to access resources for for survivorship and resilience, which will serve you in being with emotions of grief, trauma, and loss, and feeling safe in your body. In this workshop we will work with compassionate, gentle poses, poetry, journaling, essential oils, breathing practices, emotional freedom technique, myofascial release to down regulate and support your nervous system, and chanting to tone the ventral vagus nerve. This workshop is founded on the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, and Dr. Bessel van Der Kolk, and Melanie's own work with clients in delivery of bodywork, yoga and meditation, including her work with trauma and in the Maine State Prison. You will leave with an understanding of the physiology of the nervous system and practices that reinforce your understanding and trust in your innermost wisdom to return you safely home to yourself. This workshop will be supported by beautiful singing bowls, harmonium, and healing mantras from the deliciously talented Fletcher Boote.

In this lecture we use an online tool and fun, interactive content to demonstrate a natural order to money that will help you identify your sticking points and move beyond them. The idea that energy can get stuck is a concept that many Yogis are comfortable with. The same can be true of our money. We tend to be wired a certain way and our type of hardware predisposes us to getting stuck in a certain chakra or relationship with money. In Cirque Body Aerial Yoga class, yoga asanas have a unique expression with the fabric's support integrated. All classes have conditioning and restorative components, much like a regular mat yoga practice. Take your yoga practice off the ground one limb at a time in a progression that suits you. Aerial yoga is designed to challenge you spiritually, mentally, and physically. Ashok Nalamalapu was born in India and has been a devotee since his childhood. He has been leading multi-faith chants and playing harmonium since 2011, singing in the traditional Indian Raga style.  Ashok has been studying with Indian classical musicians such as Sri D.V. Mohana Krishna and Grammy Nominee, Jai Uttal.  As part of his spiritual path, he has led kirtan at many festivals across the country including Bhakti Fest in California,  Lovelight Festival in Maryland and Maine Yoga Fest. Ashok has also led kirtan at colleges, temples in India and the US, and yoga centers such as Kripalu, Ananda Ashram and Integral Yoga Institute. In addition, he has served as a Master of Ceremonies, inspiring the audiences at all the major US kirtan festivals. He is a lead vocal singer at Swan Kirtan band. This is an opportunity for each student to explore, experience and balance their own chakras and have fun at the same time. It is also a great opportunity to hone your intuition!

No dance experience required! This isn't about how you are moving, what you are doing or not doing, or what anyone else is doing. It is an inward experience. This is a moving meditation, a journey. It is about dropping into you and listening, noticing and feeling. It is about connecting with the elements. We will be dancing with our eyes lowered; this will allow your inner experience as well as give you a sense of spatial awareness as you move. You may find that you are in stillness, or that you dance freely. Each chakra will give you a different experience. It can be like you are exploring 7 different realms as we explore the elements of each chakra. Guided Imagery will set the scene and prepare you for each chakra.

This is a judgment-free zone. You don't even get to judge yourself!

Restorative yoga is a more passive style of yoga and combined with aerial fabric creates a relaxing float experience. Postures are held for longer to access deeper stretches. Most postures will target hips, shoulders, and spine. Join us for a workshop experience like no other!

To begin the workshop, enjoy restorative, yin style aerial yoga, approachable for all levels as you will be guided through slow-moving, mindful transitions and introduced to the therapeutic advantages of gentle, supported poses. During the second half of the workshop will be a special floating soundscape experience as you float in savasana above the ground, experiencing meditative tones, energetic touch, and many other various sound vibrations all around your entire body from all angles while you relax and bath in harmonic frequency. Strength in Surrender: Creating Space for Change

Yin Yoga has been on the rise in modern yoga culture and for good reason. We live in a fast-paced and ever-changing world where busy is glorified and stillness can be seen as unproductive. However, through my own life and practice I find the opposite to be true. When I have slowed down I find that I am better able to witness my thoughts, my patterns, and respond (rather than react) to challenges I face.

Strength in Surrender is built around the concept that through the practice and balance of both stillness and surrender (Yin Yoga) and tapas and dedication (Vinyasa Flow) we can create physical space in our bodies and minds, let go of old stories and open up to new experiences and ways of participating in life. The workshop begins with a Yin Yoga practice and encourages exploration of the mind through meditate in shapes in order to slow down the body. Through the Yin portion of the workshop students will be encouraged to explore inquiry, what emotions arise, and where sensation settles within the body. The second half of the workshop will be a gentle Vinyasa Flow targeting the same muscle groups/areas of the body in order to now work on building strength and exploring new sensations in movement. The workshop begins and ends with a body scan meditation for students to observe any subtle shifts before and after the practice.

Yoga at the Fort: This trip combines two of our favorite activities: sea kayaking and yoga! Take a guided paddle out to Fort Gorges for a 45-minute yoga session followed by a tour of the Civil War Era Granite Fort!

Fort Gorges, a Civil War-era granite fort surrounded by water, is one of the most fascinating spots in Casco Bay, and it's only accessible by small boat. The former parade grounds, surrounded by gorgeous granite walls, is a remarkably ideal spot for yoga. The trip will begin with your licensed kayak guide offering a basic kayak lesson and then leading the group on a paddle through Portland harbor and across open water to tiny Hog Island. You'll land on a beach by the fort's entrance and explore its elegant granite halls and dark passageways. Make sure you check out the gorgeous view of the Portland skyline from the rooftop!

Then your yoga class will begin in the grassy, calm parade grounds of the fort. You'll stretch, strengthen and rejuvenate. The yoga class is suitable for all ages & abilities. The kayaking part of the trip is great for all skill levels -- even first-time kayakers.

Restorative yoga is a more passive style of yoga and combined with aerial fabric creates a relaxing float experience. Postures are held for longer to access deeper stretches. Most postures will target hips, shoulders, and spine. Join us for a workshop experience like no other!

To begin the workshop, enjoy restorative, yin style aerial yoga, approachable for all levels as you will be guided through slow-moving, mindful transitions and introduced to the therapeutic advantages of gentle, supported poses. Mantras and their meanings, demystifying yoga's sacred sounds.

We create a beautiful and sacred space where we come together to practice our yoga. We chant OM, hearing the sound of this ancient mantra vibrating within us; at the end of our practice we say, Namaste. But what is the deeper meaning of these and other sacred sounds? They are a way, along with the physical practice, to create a solid foundation and connection to the Infinite, a connection to our divine Self.
In this workshop we will do some simple poses and then move right into the yoga of Sound. So much of our yoga is inspired by these mantras, but in the west, we have focused mainly on yoga's physical properties. As these are important, what is also essential, is a deeper understanding of the mantras that go along with the poses. In this workshop, we will do some chanting-Naam Japa and experience first hand, the eternal wisdom that connects our soul to the Infinite. As you chant, a vibration flows through you and as we sing these Infinite sounds, we connect with that eternal vibration of wisdom and devotion. These sacred words of Sanskrit and Gurmukhi, which means “from the mouth of the Guru” are sung in the original language, so that we can experience that same exalted state of realization and devotion as when the words were originally uttered.

No prior experience is needed. Come with an open heart and ready to sing!

Drumming with Colin Dougher
Colin Dougher is a multi-faced multi-percussionist, focusing on handwork with an Afro-Cuban flair. Playing since 15 years old, he’s often eschewed playing in conventional band settings, seeking more personal settings in which to create and shape sounds.

Recent years have seen Colin accompanying yoga classes, meditation events, and holistic health happenings, having been a regular feature at Hustle & Flow Studios (Portland,ME) for many years. He’s also appeared live and on record accompanying acclaimed songwriting sister Zeile August.
In 2017, Colin appeared at Mayfest in Cold Spring, NY. He hosted a collection of family-friendly events as part of the festival featuring internationally acclaimed musical acts, yoga instructors, art programs and activities.

In Winter 2017/18, Colin is simultaneously building a studio, a hybrid stick/multi-percussion rig, and custom frame drums.

Colin is available for studio and live sessions, as well as live and recorded sound design for yoga, meditation, and many other classes, festivals, and events.

Come learn how to climb on your friends. This class will be an opportunity to safely explore basing, flying, and spotting from simple counter poses to complete poses.  Students will build strength, increase flexibility and cultivate balance with the help and trust of a partner or small group. 

This class will include classic L basing, inversions, flows, standing partner poses as well as some Thai massage fundamentals as a foundation for therapeutic flying.

For most of us the idea of surrender as a virtue may seem unfamiliar. What does the word ‘surrender’ conjure up for you? In a society where we idealize control, surrender is synonymous with defeat. We must sink into the wisdom of letting go and allow ourselves to experience surrender. In yogic philosophy, this concept is called Ishvara Pranidhana. It is listed as the last of the five niyamas in the Yoga Sutras- or the five observances for a healthy and liberated life.

Take yourself on a mini-retreat to clear your mind and melt away stress and tension during this fusion of restorative yoga, abhyanga (Ayurvedic self-massage), aromatherapy, and the therapeutic vibration of sacred Tibetan Singing Bowls.
